Section 179 for Dump Trucks: Buy Before December 31 and Write Off Your Truck This Year

If your business needs a dump truck, buying it before December 31 could lower this year’s tax bill. Under Section 179 of the U.S. tax code, many businesses can deduct the full cost of a qualifying work truck in the year they put it to work, instead of spreading it over five or six years.

For contractors, landscapers and owner-operators in California, that can free up cash for fuel, crew and the next job. Here is how Section 179 works for dump trucks and how to make the year-end deadline.

What Is the Section 179 Deduction?

Section 179 lets a business deduct the cost of qualifying equipment and vehicles in the year it buys them and puts them into service. Normally, a truck is depreciated a little at a time over several years.

The deduction reduces your taxable income. It is not a tax credit, so your actual savings depend on your tax rate. The 2025 federal tax law (the One Big Beautiful Bill Act) raised the overall Section 179 limit well above what most small businesses spend in a year, so a dump truck purchase fits comfortably inside it.

Why Dump Trucks Get the Best Section 179 Treatment

How much you can deduct depends heavily on the vehicle’s weight and type. Dump trucks sit in the most favorable group.

Vehicle typeGVWRSection 179 treatment
Dump trucks and heavy work trucksOver 14,000 lbsFull deduction may apply, no SUV cap
Work trucks and pickups (non-SUV)6,001 to 14,000 lbsFull deduction may apply
Heavy SUVs6,001 to 14,000 lbsCapped at a lower annual limit
Cars and light trucks6,000 lbs or underSmall first-year limit

Three points matter most for our customers:

  • Dump trucks are named work vehicles. Their design makes them clearly business equipment, not personal vehicles.
  • Used trucks qualify. A used dump truck can qualify for the same deduction as a new one, as long as it is new to your business.
  • Upfits count too. A dump body, chipper box, utility bed or rack installed on your truck is generally part of its cost.

The Rules You Need to Meet

  • Placed in service by December 31. For calendar-year businesses, the truck must be bought and actually working for your business by December 31, 2026. A truck ordered but not delivered does not count.
  • More than 50% business use. The truck must be used mainly for business. If business use later drops to 50% or below, part of the deduction may have to be paid back.
  • Limited to business income. The deduction cannot exceed your business’s taxable income for the year. Any amount left over can usually be carried forward.
  • Bonus depreciation can cover the rest. If Section 179 does not cover the full cost, bonus depreciation may handle the balance.

Every business is different, so talk to your CPA or tax advisor before you buy.

Financing and Section 179 Work Together

You do not need to pay cash to claim Section 179. A financed truck can qualify for the full deduction in the year it is placed in service, even though you pay for it over time.

This means your first-year tax savings can offset a large part of your early payments. For a growing hauling business, that can make adding a truck far more affordable than it first looks.

How to Buy Your Dump Truck Before Year End

  1. Talk to your CPA now. Confirm how much deduction you can use this year.
  2. Pick the right truck. Choose by payload, bed size, fuel type and the jobs you run. Our inventory lists trucks by make, model, engine and drive.
  3. Apply for financing early. Approval and paperwork take time, and December gets busy.
  4. Plan any upfits. If you need a dump system, chipper box or utility bed installed, allow time for the build.
